Remote Field Inspections (RFT)

Accurate method for verifying material integrity and conductive material coating thickness. Most commonly used for tubular inspections and verifying heat exchanger integrity, and for bundle life trending reporting to help prevent unscheduled outages due to unexpected bundle failure.

What this test helps us understand

  • detecting defects in ferrous tubes
  • variations in material composition

What we commonly test
  • heat exchanger tubes for pitting, fretting, cracking, erosion or corrosion thinning

Test method summary

  • remote field testing (RFT) is an accurate method for finding defects in ferrous tubes
  • an RFT  probe is inserted down the inside of a tube and is able to detect inside and outside defects
  • the RFT probe consists of an exciter coil which transmits a signal to the detector pickup coil, the exciter is pumped with AC to emit a magnetic field
  • the field travels outwards from the exciter coil, through the tube wall and along the tube, the detector is placed inside the tube, two to three diameters away from the exciter and detects the magnetic field that has traveled back in from the outside of the tube wall
  • in areas of metal loss the field arrives at the detector with a faster travel time and greater signal strength due to the reduced resistance through the areas with thinner steel
