Ultrasonics

Accurate method for measuring material thicknesses, corrosion mapping and weld inspection in both ferrous and non- ferrous  materials. Most commonly used for the detection and characterization of internal flaws, thickness inspections and for corrosion trending and reporting to help prevent unscheduled outages due to unexpected failure.

What this test helps us understand

  • it is the most accurate method for measuring the thickness of materials
  • used for the detection and characterization of internal flaws
  • used to perform corrosion surveys
  • used to evaluate weld integrity

What we commonly test
  • the most accurate NDT Inspection process for gauging material thickness
  • plant inspection for both ferrous and non-ferrous materials
  • Weldments  for soundness

Test Method Summary

  • usually used in conjunction with magnetic particle inspections
  • the ultrasonic pulses are emitted either along a path normal to ( 0 deg.) or on an angular path to ( Shear wave) the inspection surface.
  • for 0 deg the reflections from the inner and outer walls follow the same path back to the transducer, and the time interval between the first echo from the near test surface and the first echo from the far test surface can be used to represent the thickness
  • for Shear wave the reflections from interfaces are analysed to determine the presence and location of flaws or discontinuities.
